A new cover letter must be written for every application you make. Don't just make a general letter or change the position name!
Here are some tips that I share with my clients when I create their cover letters:
Address it to a person. If no person is listed in the advertisement, look for one - Google, websites, LinkedIn!!! Having a name and title shows you've taken that extra time to do your research, which helps you stand out from other applicants.
This isn't just a rehash of your resume. Use it to explain how your skills will specifically benefit the company. This will make you stand out from someone with the same skills and qualifications. What will you do for them? Address their requirements in the advertisement - cover off on their list -you can do that with dot points and highlight the keywords to make it easier to read and identify.
Include the job title and company you're applying for. These points show that you've at least read the job and care about the position.
Use specific examples to show how you can meet their needs. Quantify your examples using figures, facts - and specifics to demonstrate your worth. Instead of saying 'lead teams' state 'I lead, mentor, and train a team of 10 personnel, identifying their experience gaps and aligning training to elevate their experience and skillset'. SO much better!
Most importantly, address their selection criteria! They have told you what they want, so explain how you can meet each one of those needs!
Don’t use grandma statements like ‘I have great customer service skills’ - it shows nothing. Use the CAR/STAR method to demonstrate a problematic situation you managed, your actions, and your results. Don't forget to highlight your results - be proud of these.
